忍耐とは何か？ What is Patience?
私は主を待ち望みます。私のたましいは、待ち望みます。
私は主のみことばを待ちます。
(詩篇130:5)
忍耐強いとはどういう意味でしょうか。答えや解決策がすぐに欲しいときに神を待ち望むのが難しいのはなぜでしょうか。牧師であり作家でもあるティム・ケラーは最近、忍耐とは「すべてを知ろうとする取り越し苦労をやめること」であると述べました。別の言い方をすると、私たちは問題に対する答えを知るべきだと思うからこそ、忍耐できなくなるのです。さらに、その問題がいつまでに解決されるかも知るべきだと思ってしまいます。そこまで知らなければならないと思い込んでいるのです。しかし忍耐とは、私たちはすべてを知ることができない、と謙虚に認めることです。何が最善であるか、そしてそれがいつ実現するのか、私たちには分からないのです。私たちは神様ではないのですから、神様と同じレベルの責任を負うことはできないのです。詩篇130篇の著者は、その全存在をかけて謙虚になることを選びました。彼は自分で問題を解決しようと骨折ることをやめ、神様とその言葉に希望を託したのです。神様はすべてをご存じです。神様は何が最善であるかをご存じです。それこそが忍耐への道であることを認めつつ、救いの希望を抱いて主を待ち望みましょう。
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
(Psalm 130:5)
What does it mean to be patient? Why can it be hard to wait on God when we want an answer or a solution right now? Pastor and author Tim Keller recently said that patience is “a deliberate laying down of the burden of assumed omniscience.” In other words, we are impatient because we think we are sure what the answer to our problem is. We also think we are sure when that problem needs to be solved. We are fooling ourselves to think that we have that level of knowledge. Patience is the choice to be humble and say we don’t know everything. We can’t understand what is best and when it needs to happen. We need to say that we are not God and we give up carrying God-level responsibility. In Psalm 130, the writer is making this humble choice with all of his being. He is giving up worrying about fixing the problem by himself, but he puts his hope in God and his word. God knows everything. God knows what is best. Recognizing that is the road to patience. Let’s wait on the Lord and put our hope in him for salvation.
