国を誇りにすること　National Pride

私たちは自分の出身地や、自分が育った国のことを誇りに思うものです。詩篇のこの箇所では、シオン（エルサレム）の出身であることが特に名誉なことであると述べられています。それは神によって立てられ、神のご加護がある民に数えられることを語っているのです。それは神の特別な民となることです。シオン以外の国々も驚くような素晴らしいことを自慢することはできますが、神ご自身によって立てられた国の出身者であることは、それとは比べものにならないくらい素晴らしいことなのです！

しかし、この詩篇はスキャンダルになるようなことも述べています。ラハブ（エジプトの別名）、バビロン、ペリシテ、ツロ、そしてクシュを、神はイスラエルに属する国として数えようと言われるのです。これらの国々は別の時代にはイスラエルの敵として嫌われていました。その中にはイスラエルの民を殺した者や、奴隷にしたり追放したりした者もいました。それでも主なる神は、ご自身を知らない人々が主を彼らの神として認める日が来ることを心待ちにしておられます。最もふさわしくない民が神のお気に入りリストに、つまりシオンで生まれた民に加えられるのです。

私たちは、日本人であれ、別の国の出身であれ、イエス様が生まれる前に書かれたこの詩篇の言葉の成就としてここにいます。私たちがイエス様を信じて、その新しいいのちを受け取るとき、私たちは新しい身分、神の都シオンの市民権を受け取るのです。私たちの国籍は神の民へと変わるのです。それは祝福に満ちた、誇るべき身分です。

We are often proud of the area we are from or the country we grew up in.  In this Psalm, the writer says that being from Zion (Jerusalem) is a high honor.  It is talking about being a part of a people that are established and cared for by God.  It is being part of God’s special people.  While different countries can claim something amazing or famous about them, it could never compare to being from the nation of people established by God himself! 

This Psalm, however, says something scandalous.  Rahab (another name for Egypt), Babylon, Philistia, Tyre and Cush will be listed in God’s census as belonging to Israel.  These nations were hated enemies of Israel at different times, some of them killing Israelites, while others enslaved or exiled them.  Still, God looks forward to a day when people who didn’t know Him acknowledge Him as their God.  The most unlikely peoples will be listed in God’s favorite list…people born in Zion. 

Whether we are from Japan or elsewhere in the world, we are a fulfillment of this Psalm, written before the birth of Jesus.  When we believe in Jesus and receive his new life, we receive a new status and a new citizenship in Zion, the city of God.   Our nationality changes to the people of God.  That is a status to celebrate and be proud of.
