嘘ではない Not a Lie
神のしもべ、また、イエス・キリストの使徒パウロ－－－－私は、神に選ばれた人々の信仰と、敬虔にふさわしい真理の知識とのために使徒とされたのです。それは、偽ることのない神が、永遠の昔から約束してくださった永遠のいのちの望みに基づくことです。(テトス1:1-2)
今年の夏、私の息子が通っている幼稚園のウサギが熱中症になって死んでしまいました。夏休みが終わってから先生たちは、あのウサギはもう私たちのところにはいないけど、天国からみんなのことを見守ってくれているよ、と説明してくれました。数年前、私が仏教式の葬儀に参列したときにも似たような話を聞きました。それは「今、彼女は天からあなたを見て微笑んでいることでしょう」という話でした。
死は私たちにとって厄介な問題です。だから私たちは様々な方法で死の問題を解決しようとします。その一つは、私たちが愛したあの人はどこかへ行ってしまったのではなく、永遠の存在になって神様のようになったのだ、といった楽しい話にすることです。それが本当の話であればいいのですが、何か素敵なことを信じたからといって、それが真実になるわけではありません。例えば、銀行の預金が１億円になると信じても、お金が実際に手に入るわけではないですよね。多くの人は、クリスチャンは永遠の命を信じているけど、それは葬式で話されるような慰めの言葉とか信念のようなものだろうと考えています。永遠の命は理解するのが難しいし、それが確かであることを示す証拠も少ないのですが、実は永遠の命を信じる根拠は私たち自身のうちにはないのです。つまり私たちがそれを本当だと願うから、それが本当になるということではないのです。永遠の命を信じる根拠は神様の性質にあります。神様は永遠の命を約束して下さいました。そして神様は嘘をつきません。この聖書の箇所がそれを思い出させてくれます。私たちは目に見えない神様を信じる信仰を求められています。私たちは神様の約束を信じ、神様は嘘をつかないお方であるということを信じる信仰を求められています。永遠の命は、私たちを慰めるために考え出されたフィクションではないのです。それは真理に根ざしていて、真実であられる神様によって約束されていることなのです。

This summer, the rabbit at my son’s kindergarten died from heat stroke. After the vacation was over, the teachers explained to the students that he wasn’t with us anymore but now he’s watching over and protecting them. A few years ago I attended a Buddhist funeral where they said something similar: “Now she’s looking down from heaven smiling on you.”
Death is troubling to us, and we try different ways to cope with it. One way is to say pleasant things that we hope are true; that our loved ones are never gone, but they are eternal and now even god-like. But believing in something nice doesn’t make it true. I want to believe that my bank account has 100 million yen, but I absolutely don’t have that. Many people may see the Christian belief in eternal life as similar to comforting words and beliefs you say at a funeral. While eternal life is a hard idea for us to grasp and we have little evidence for, our foundation for this belief is not based on us. It is not true because we want it to be true. It is based on the character of God. God promised eternal life―and God does not lie, this scripture reminds us. We still need faith to believe in an unseen God. We need faith to believe in his promise and that he does not lie. But eternal life is not a man-made fiction for our comfort. It is rooted in truth and is promised by a God who is true.
